In response to the alarming number of over one million properties in Mississippi lacking flood insurance, Governor Tate Reeves has proclaimed March 16-22, 2025, as Flood Insurance Awareness Week. This initiative, prompted by the Mississippi Insurance Department, aims to emphasize the importance of securing flood insurance before it becomes a necessity.
“Mississippi has faced significant flooding in recent years, which has led to considerable hardship and financial burden for both homeowners and business owners,” stated Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney. He noted that even minor flooding, such as a few inches of rain in a small home, could result in repair costs exceeding $10,000. Currently, Mississippi has nearly 53,000 National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies active.
Flood insurance can be obtained through the NFIP or private insurers, as standard homeowners’ policies do not cover flood damage. It is important to note that flood insurance policies typically require a 30-day waiting period before becoming effective.
Residents are encouraged to determine their flood risk using the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Map Service Center. In addition, individuals should create a household inventory with the NAIC’s Home Inventory App, which offers a free and secure way to catalog belongings online for easy access during disasters.
Preparation Tips for Potential Flooding:
- Enroll in community warning systems. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and NOAA Weather Radio provide emergency alerts.
- Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and shelter plans.
- Store important documents in a waterproof container and create digital copies secured with a password.
- Designate an out-of-state contact for family communication in emergencies, ensuring everyone knows the contact’s details.
- Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as medication, pet supplies, and extra batteries and chargers.
Post-Flood Safety Measures:
- Follow official guidance for returning home.
- Limit driving to emergencies.
- Be cautious of animals that may have entered your property.
- Wear protective gear, such as gloves and boots, during cleanup.
- Avoid contact with wet electrical equipment and turn off electricity safely to prevent shock.
- Refrain from wading in potentially contaminated floodwater.
- Operate generators outdoors and away from windows.
- Promptly file a flood insurance claim and contact FEMA Flood Disaster Assistance at 1‐800‐621‐3362 for further support.
This awareness campaign underscores the critical need for preparedness and insurance coverage in safeguarding against the financial impacts of flooding.
