Last week, the Mississippi Forestry Commission’s wildland firefighters tackled over 180 fires across the state, driven by strong winds and dry conditions. Notably, only one of these fires involved all fire departments in Rankin County, highlighting the widespread nature of the incidents.
As the season progresses, the likelihood of burn bans increases, with Itawamba County currently the only area under such a restriction. These bans may become more common as spring brings heightened fire risks.
In response to the seasonal threat, March 2025 has been designated “Wildfire Prevention Month” in Mississippi. The Mississippi Forestry Commission warns that the dry and windy conditions typical of March often lead to a spike in wildfires. To mitigate these risks, the commission advises residents to adopt preventive measures.
Escaped debris burns remain the leading cause of wildfires. To prevent such incidents, residents are urged to maintain small burn piles, keep a water source nearby, and be aware that they could face liability for any damages if a fire escapes.
