We are saddened to announce the passing of John Matthews, a former governor of our state, who died on May 10, 2023, at the age of 88. John was a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people he served.
John was born on January 17, 1935, in our state's capital, where he spent his entire life. He began his career in public service as a city council member, and later served as mayor of his hometown. He was elected governor in 1980 and served two terms, during which he implemented numerous policies to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure in the state.
John was known for his intelligence, his passion for public service, and his commitment to social justice. He was a champion of civil rights and worked to promote equal opportunities for all citizens. His leadership and dedication to public service will be remembered and honored for many years to come.
John is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as a large extended family and countless friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held on May 15, 2023, at the state capitol building, to celebrate John's life and his contributions to our state. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity that supports education, a cause that was close to John's heart.
